Barbie's Influences, The Writer's Strike, Moon Landings, etc.
In which I provide a few interesting items to get you through the rest of your work week. Yeah, Boy!
🙋♀️ Hey, there. Sorry I missed ya this Sunday, I got wrapped up in Barbenheimer.
♬ This is legitimately one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Found some info on Wikipedia: “the machine is powered by a hand-crank, and works by raising steel marbles through the machine into multiple feeder tubes, where they are then released from height via programmable release gates, falling and striking a musical instrument below.”
🎹 Never judge a book by its cover: Flavor Flav on piano.
🚫 Did streaming cause the writer’s strike? Vox talked to four television writers and showrunners about how things have changed. “Companies like Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, and more have given consumers an unprecedented array of films and TV shows and opened the door to new voices that don't have to adhere to mainstream network formats. On the other hand, streaming has also changed how television gets produced, the role writers play, and how they get paid.”
💰Since I was just talking about this, the story of the Michigan man that found quite the lotto loophole. “Jerry quickly calculated that if he spent $1,100 on 1,100 tickets, odds are he'd have one four-number winner that would pay out $1,000, and at least 18 or 19 three-number winners that paid $900. That meant his $1,100 investment would yield a $1,900 return, for a tidy profit of $800… Next, he purchased $8,000 worth of tickets and nearly doubled his money.” Not mentioned in the article, but this was adapted into a movie last year.
🎞 Greta Gerwig on the vast influences on her latest, Barbie. Lots of great films. This movie would have likely been a success regardless, but I think Gerwig deserved credit for making this an even bigger hit, bringing in a whole different audience that would have not seen a Barbie movie otherwise, myself included.
📍Still time for that roadtrip this summer. Here’s a list of thirty potential trips spread across seven continents.
🌝 A lot of planned moon landings in 2023. “This is the most ambitious year since the Apollo program.”
🦖 How many dinosaurs have yet to be discovered? “And even within those ancient environments, most life-forms never made it into the fossil record. They were either consumed, decayed or otherwise broken down. The vast majority of organisms that have lived on the planet didn’t stand a chance of becoming fossils.”
😘 Hope everyone is having a great week. Talk to ya soon. Until then, please remember to keep the Hoping Machine running.
Love,
Luke
