Shower Thinking, A TikTok Attack, Bourdain's Favorite Food Books, etc.
In which the kids aren't alright.
🦈 It’s Shark Week! Yes, it’s on Discovery, but FYI, it’s also streaming on MAX.
💬 What is the longest word in the English language? “Contrary to popular belief, it is not supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” Which, speaking of, I did not know until just now, actually precedes Mary Poppins.
❤️ I “love” this statue in London by Yoni Alter.
🧠 Why do we do our best thinking in the shower? “The sudden flashes of insight we have in states of meditative distraction—showering, pulling weeds in the garden, driving home from work—often elude our conscious mind precisely because they require its disengagement. When we’re too actively engaged in conscious thought—exercising our intelligence, so to speak—our creativity and inspiration suffer.”
🤳 Parent-influencers must share earnings with kids, says new Illinois law. “Parents and caregivers must set aside money in a trust for the child based on what percent of the video they appear in, the law says. The children will be able to access the trust once they turn 18.”
🤖 ChatGPT just (accidentally) shared its secret rules. “‘You are ChatGPT, a large language model trained by OpenAI, based on the GPT-4 architecture. You are chatting with the user via the ChatGPT iOS app,’ the chatbot wrote. ‘This means most of the time your lines should be a sentence or two, unless the user's request requires reasoning or long-form outputs. Never use emojis, unless explicitly asked to. Knowledge cutoff: 2023-10 Current date: 2024-06-30.’”
📲 Do you check out your date’s Instagram before the first big night? “Scrolling through their following list is a lot like taking a peek inside their diary, especially since not everyone seems to notice, or care, that this list is often public if their account is.”
😢 This one is rough: “Seventh and eighth graders in Malvern, Pa., impersonating their teachers posted disparaging, lewd, racist and homophobic videos in the first known mass attack of its kind in the U.S.”
🐁 Nanorobots have successfully reduced cancerous tumors in mice. “By hiding the death receptors within the nanorobot, the scientists were able to program it so that the death receptors are only activated when exposed to cancer cells. In the experiment, this reduced tumor growth by 70%.”
📚 Season three of The Bear has me doing a lot of food reading this week. Stumbled on this list by Anthony Bourdain of his favorite books on the subject.
✌️ Have a wonderful Shark Week. Keep the Hoping Machine running.
Love,
Luke
