😢 Comic legend Bob Newhart passed this week. We also lost some fixtures of ‘80s/’90s pop culture. Hearing about Dr. Ruth’s passing, may she rest in peace, I was reminded of this hilarious conversation between Letterman and Mulaney earlier this year that reminded me a lot of myself. We also lost Richard Simmons, who always killed on Letterman.
And of course Shannen, forever a Mallrat, forever a Heather in my heart.
🤘Kathleen Hanna finally got her due. Bikini Kill just made their television debut, performing “Rebel Girl,” 31 years after its release. Bonus Clip: Hanna annoying Beavis and Butt-Head.
📚 How does the world’s biggest library decide what’s history? “The U.S. Library of Congress continues the tradition of conserving knowledge with one of the largest library collections ever compiled. It is home to more than 175 million works humans have produced, from e-books to ancient scrolls, which it aims to preserve for future generations.”
🧑🏫 Speaking of libraries, does anyone remember these hilarious posters urging you to read? “John Cena looks like a CEO in the third act of a feel-good movie who just learned the power of love thanks to a gang of scrappy kids. This whole poster looks like it’s afraid of hot sauce.”
🔠 …or how about The Letter People? We were surrounded by them in my kindergarten classroom.
📫 If you’re ever in the southernmost part of South America, be sure to send me a postcard.
🕵️ Not the best article, but it has always made me laugh thinking about how shitty of a spy James Bond actually is. Dude usually just watzes through the front door and immediately announces who he is.
🎶 Couple clips of Hendrix, acoustic, and some great clips of Prince, too.
🛒 If ya really think it’s the end of the world as we know it, you can pick up 150 servings of food from Costco for $99.
✏️ “Too Cool To Do Drugs”… or maybe not? The pencil that told kids to do something they shouldn’t.
📺 Didn’t have an A&E biography on Ol’ Dirty Bastard on my 2024 bingo card.
🥧 Apparently they’ve figured out 202 trillion digits of pi. Via MetaFilter: “For scale, if they were to print this out, you would need a stack of 8.5x11 paper over 4,000 miles high.”
✍️ A poem I’ve returned to again and again, Self-Portrait at 28, by David Berman.
“I am trying to get at something so simple
that I have to talk plainly
so the words don’t disfigure it,
and if it turns out that what I say is untrue,
then at least let it be harmless
like a leaky boat in the reeds
that is bothering no one.”
✌️Until next Sunday, keep that Hoping Machine running.
