The Action of Jackie Chan, Clothesline Animals, Comfort Media, etc.
In which this newsletter is the opposite of doomscrolling.
🗳️ Hope you voted, but as your attorney, I advise you to pay zero attention to tonight’s coverage.
👕 I also advise you to look at the clothesline animals.
😌 Awhile back Kottke asked what’s your comfort media? “I reckon most of us have certain books, movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, and other media that we turn to when we need some comfort. These are things we’ve seen, read, or heard before — often many times — and know exactly what we’re going to get from them.”
Would love to hear yours. I tend to turn to lots of things, Seinfeld, Star Wars and The Beatles among them.
🌦️ Rest in peace, Phil Lesh. I am very much Lindsay Weir when I hear “Box of Rain.” “Walk out of any doorway, feel your way… like the day before. Maybe you'll find direction, around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you.”
👑 Let the wild rumpus start! The art of Maurice Sendek’s Wild Things at the Denver Art Museum, now-thru February 17. Kinda/sorta-related: across the pond, Wes Anderson is also museum-bound.
🗯️ Not sure if I’ll see Here, but the graphic novel from which its based seems like a must.
☎️ Before Alexa or Siri or Google, you could call and ask the librarian.
🥵 How do they actually measure the heat of hot peppers? Probably more than you ever wanted to know about Scoville units, but I found it interesting. Kinda/sorta related: I’ve never seen Hot Ones. For those who have, any favorite interviews?
🤺 How to Do Action Comedy: every director in Hollywood could learn a lot from Jackie Chan.
🥋An oldie, but a goodie. Training montages gave us unrealistic expectations, or, how Karate Kid ruined the modern world. “America is full of frustrated, broken, baffled people because so many of us think, ‘If I work this hard, this many hours a week, I should have (a great job, a nice house, a nice car, etc). I don't have that thing, therefore something has corrupted the system and kept me from getting what I deserve, and that something must be (the government, illegal immigrants, my wife, my boss, my bad luck, etc).’” No shortcuts, folks.
✌️ Keep that Hoping Machine a-runnin’, and remember, “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”
Love,
Luke
