I actually heard about it anecdotally on a podcast. They said they were visiting their parents and the recording of their brother sounded quite passable. They immediately identified it as a scam, but doubted their parents would have caught on so quick.
Man, that is so scary! Must be effective, even the old tricks seemed to have a nice conversion rate. Adding in the deep fakes with the traditional techniques of crisis + urgency. Yikes! Like what if they just have the son say for a minute 'Hey talk to the {lawyer/police officer/ etc. }' who then authoritatively describes the situation and why son can't talk anymore... #nightmares
